Decanter: Best sparkling wines of 2016: Five greatsPosted on the 13-01-2017
Wiston was delighted to have been chosen by Decanter experts from around the world to be amongst the bottles of sparkling wine and Champagne that impressed them most this year. (See January issue of Decanter Page 1, Page 2, Page 3)
Before New Year these were re-tasted by a panel of Decanter tastings directors, Christelle Guibert, Sarah Jane Evans MW and Andy Howard MW. They picked Wiston Blanc de Blancs 2010 as one of the 5 most exciting sparkling wines of 2016. The wine was given 94 points and described as; “Appealing, generous toasty, buttery nose. Refreshing acidity enlivens some rich flavours of baked apple and buttered tea cakes…” Read Decanter’s full recommendations po.st/PCLS5O
Wiston Arrives in NYC!Posted on the 13-09-2016
Frederick Wildman, wine importers into New York since 1934, had their annual tasting at the impressive Guastivinos last week. As the most recent addition to their prestigious group of wine suppliers, we were invited to join them and tell the sommeliers of NYC that the sun does shine in England and its wines are ready to create a new category on their lists. So we packed our bags, leaving the vineyards basking in record breaking September temperatures, to fly out and introduce Wiston to the East Coast. It went down a storm and we had great fun comparing notes with Hubert de Billy from Pol Roger. (We later wondered if Churchill had ever drunk Pol Roger on his visit to Wiston House in the 1940s and will be checking the wine cellar archives on our return).
Wiston Wins IWC trophy and Sommeliers Critics ChoicePosted on the 22-06-2015
During the whirl of English Wine Week (if you missed it have a look here) we were delighted to be awarded two trophies; firstly to the recently released Blanc de Blancs 2010 at the Sommeliers Awards as best English Sparkling Wine and then to the ‘golden’ member of the family the Rosé 2011*, which won best English Sparkling Rose at the International Wine Competition. It’s great inspiration for the team who are working their magic on the remarkably large 2014 vintage right now.
* Sadly our Rosé 2011 is no longer available, but you may like to try Wiston Rosé 2014.
The Queen to launch Britannia…Posted on the 04-03-2015
We are thrilled that it will be Her Majesty the Queen who will be breaking a Nebuchadnezzar of Wiston on the bow of Britannia on Tuesday 10th March at Southampton. Pip, Harry, Dermot and Richard are all getting ready for the celebrations on board, where the Wiston Estate Brut NV will be flowing freely. Well done to Robin, who took on the duty of hand labeling the enormous bottles and has done a fantastic job.
WISTON HEADS TO LA FOR BAFTA TEA PARTY…Posted on the 14-01-2015
Richard and Kirsty were delighted to accompany the 2010 cuvee to the BAFTA Los Angeles Tea Party where it was being served to the nominees, with some of the best British actors and actresses in attendance. There was huge excitement about the wine and guests were keen to talk all about what is going on in the world of English wine, they included the likes of Keira Knightley & James Righton, Rosamund Pike, Eddie Redmayne and Matthew Beard (watch this space) and Julian & Emma Fellowes. A highlight was to meet Tcheky Karyo from the incredible Luc Besson film “Nikita” (one of Richard’s favourite films). See more here and you can even catch them at the end of this BBC clip
Mary Berry visits the winery…Posted on the 19-12-2014
We were delighted to be able to show Mary around the vineyard and winery for her Christmas show. She is remarkable and (as with everyone else in the country) we fast found ourselves enchanted by her humour and down to earth nature. There was one point where she had to remind us to stop talking…and start tasting! This we obligingly did. An amazing Christmas present for the whole winery team. See it again here
Wiston Nebuchadnezzar to Launch BritanniaPosted on the 22-11-2014
P&O cruises have chosen to launch Britannia, their largest ever cruise ship, with a Nebuchadnezzar of Wiston Brut NV. We are delighted and privileged to be involved in this thrilling event that will take place in March 2015. Pip was in her element and got rather excited about being captain (fear not Paul Brown retrieved his hat and will be navigating Britannia safely through her maiden voyage) And there is a fantastic video of the party we had at Wiston House with VIP passengers here
Best English NV Blanc de BlancsPosted on the 04-09-2014
Our very first release of Wiston NV Blanc de Blancs has been judged the best in class at the Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships . We are delighted to have received this incredible accolade and also to have spent some time with the lovely Essi Avellan MW a few weeks ago. Thank you.
Decanter* Gold…Posted on the 10-07-2014
Harry and Pip looked rather like movie stars when they went up to receive their gold medal from Decanter for the Rosé 2011. It was great to meet Stephen Spurrier, who has now planted his own vineyard in Dorset. For those keen to know the stats: 102 UK wines entered – 3 were awarded gold medals and internationally 15,007 wines entered – 454 were awarded gold medals.
*Competitions are strange things when it comes to wine and it’s always hard not to like the ones you do well in and raise an eyebrow when the judges don’t see things the way you do. Obviously we think Decanter is the best of the best.
Gold and Silver at Sommelier awardsPosted on the 29-05-2014
We are delighted to have received a gold medal for the Wiston Rosé 2011 and a silver medal for the Wiston NV Blanc de Blancs at this year’s Sommelier Awards. “Electric lime thunders through it.” Said Gus Gluck (Vinoteca) of the Blanc de Blancs.”
EWP welcomed us to the party….Posted on the 29-05-2014
We were delighted to be pouring Wiston for the first time at this year’s English Wine Producers trade tasting in London. Very encouraging to get such positive feedback about the wines from many of the sommeliers and MWs present. Peter Richards MW enjoyed meeting the family, “Lovely story, tremendous wines – ground breaking.” And honoured to be in Tom Cannavan’s article:
Also learnt never to try to use a wine cork to stop up a sparkling wine (nearly took my brother’s nose off when it rocketed out of the bottle – sorry Dom!)
Spring is on the way…Posted on the 10-03-2014
Hugely exciting to see leaves unfurling on the vine this week. Spring feels even more delightful and unexpected when it has been preceded by one of the wettest winters on record. It has come upon us much earlier than normal and the drive home is currently awash with the site and smell of bluebells. Utter joy.
Coolest wine label on the planet!Posted on the 02-02-2014
When we worked on the label, Pip was never going to let it be dull, so there were some members of the family (particularly one Scottish uncle) that were a little nervous as to what the world would think about its originality. We were delighted to hear that Forbes put it in the top 15 coolest wine labels on the planet:
SustainabilityPosted on the 01-12-2013
‘Sustainability’ is one of those words that has lost its potency because of popularity, rather like brilliant Oscar Wilde quotes. So we won’t bang on about it but we love the idea of thinking about the next generation (we are only here because of the decisions our forebears made). One of the things we wanted to work on was our energy requirements and that got us thinking about solar:
