We feel incredibly honoured, together with Chapel Down, to be the first English Sparkling Wines to have won a prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards 2019 'Best in Show' Trophy for our Wiston Estate Blanc de Blancs 2011.

The Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) is the world’s biggest wine competition. This year’s Awards saw over 280 wine experts from 30 countries, including 70 Masters of Wine and 23 Master Sommeliers, judging 16,800 wines from 92 countries globally. Out of all of the wines tasted blind, just 50 were awarded 'Best in Show' from all around the world and our Wiston Estate Blanc de Blancs 2011 scored a whopping 98 out of 100 points. The highest score awarded out of the whole competition to only 6 wines and the only English Sparkling Wine to receive this rating!

“This award feels like the closest our wine is ever going to get to winning an Oscar! The international nature and sheer scale of the Decanter Awards means we feel it is a very great honour and privilege to have received ‘Best in Show’ for our Blanc de Blancs 2011. It is a tribute to both this chalk downland, which our family has farmed for over 275 years, but also crucially our team in the vineyard and winery led so expertly by Dermot Sugrue.” Kirsty Goring, Marketing Director

“This is the 3rd time in 6 years that a Wiston made-wine has won the top award at DWWA – Trophy for Sugrue ‘Trouble With Dreams’ 2011 in 2014, Trophy for Wiston Estate Cuvée 2013 in 2017, and now a ‘Best in Class - Platinum Medal’ for Wiston Estate Blanc de Blancs 2011 in 2019 – not a bad record in this competition!” Dermot Sugrue, Winemaker

“The Decanter World Wine Awards is a terrific competition, there is so much to taste and enjoy – sparking so much conversation. The quality of wines entered has risen hugely again this year. For producers, the reason to enter your wine into the DWWA is that your wine gets looked at carefully by the panel, not once but sometimes four or five times before it is awarded its final mark. If your wine has been through that process, you know that it has been carefully considered for its medal. Getting into the UK or international market is difficult but if you have a medal from DWWA on the bottle, it says ‘look at me, I’m a fine wine.’” Sarah Jane Evans MW, Decanter World Wine Awards 2019 Co-Chair

The Independent English Wine Awards (IEWA) 2019 results are out and we're utterly thrilled to have been awarded the Best Sparkling Trophy for our Wiston Brut NV with our newly released Wiston Estate Cuvée 2009 coming in at second place out of 132 wines entered.

We are acutely aware that the standard of English sparkling wine continues to rise all around us and this makes it feel even more of an honour to receive such an award. Our Brut NV is a wine right at the heart and soul of all we do here at Wiston. To have our house style recognised in this way is a huge encouragement and something we are immensely proud of.
