Description

Pinot Gris is a mutation within the Pinot Family with its lineage being Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc. The grapes are a beautiful speckled pink colour and the variety is now known most commonly as Pinot Grigio in Italy and Pinot Gris from the Alsace region in France. Grown in cooler climates it can be characterised as a gently aromatic grape which also brings body and texture making it perfect for food pairing. The yeast strain selected for the fermentation was chosen to enhance those aromatic characteristics with the barrel fermentation adding more richness and weight. The small proportion of Chardonnay adds a crisp, mineral element and provides structure to the wine.

Wine making

Tank Five embraces experimentation in the winery. Each harvest the winemaking team selects parcels of grapes which they feel will make the best still wine from each harvest. This iteration is a blend of 95% Pinot Gris (from the 2023 vintage) sourced from a partner grower in Kent and 5% Wiston Broadwoods Chardonnay reserve (from the 2022 vintage). 7% of the Pinot Gris was fermented in a 5th fill barrel. Although 2023 was a challenging growing year, the fruit came in with good credentials for making still wine with sugar levels relatively high for the year and spot on acidity.
